A food lover’s library
Posted by: | CommentsI guess I’m not a shoe person nor a purse person. I’m a food lover and book lover. So it should be no surprise when I start drooling each time I’m at the cookbook section of some place
Here’s a peek at my personal stash of books, my library. For your amusement/ entertainment. It looks like I’m a full pledged foodie and book lover !
I have more cookbooks and food related books than any other genre. I do have interior decorating books, travel memoirs, Pioneer history books, Victoria Magazines, Tea time magazines, but most of my books have to do with food, eating customs, food history, food reference, food from from different cultures , food from the past and such. I’ve collected these books here, through the years, finding them on ebay, Amazon, books sales, yard sales, book stores. I’ve grown somewhat attached to them that I am not that fond of lending my books, lest they walk away never to be seen again, or worse, earmarked or used as a coaster
. They are like friends to me and losing a favorite one is like losing a good friend. I’ve got my favorite books bookmarked so much, they’ve become so much thicker because of the paper bookmarks I’ve put in them.
Favorite cookbooks are splattered with food stains & flour, and I don’t mind that as long as I’m the one who did it.
I do get rid of books all the time, replacing retired ones with newer models.
My tastes have evolved through the years and so does my taste in books. Though tastes change, the love for cookbooks remains.
I’ve always been partial to cookbooks ever since I could read, which explains the ratio of cookbooks to non-cookbooks. I do read them too and I read ‘em like you would a novel, though some are like coffee table books whose pictures serve as inspiration in my many cooking experiments. I am always cooking. I literally live in the kitchen; it’s my haven. My stress therapy if you like to call it that.
I love browsing at gorgeous food photos, gravitating towards cookbooks with lotsa colored pictures in them and anecdotes. I’ve upgraded my collection to accommodate such preference, letting go of tons of cookbooks that don’t have pictures. I still keep a couple plain ones if I find them to be of substantial merits but there’s just something about beautiful photography. After all, we eat with our eyes first. So go ahead and take a peek at my bookshelves. I know you’re curious. If you click on each of the photos, you’ll get the full image for each, so you’ll be able to read the titles. No more squinting.
I’ve tried to arrange my books according to subjects but a few manage to end up in the wrong section every so often. After all, I’m always taking them off the shelves and taking them places…

Tea with Archana and Himani
Posted by: | CommentsHere’s a glimpse of my Afternoon Tea world – what goes behind the scenes. Below is a sample of what I write down on my Ipod before a Tea. This one happend to be for a Tea with friends Archana and Himani. Menu was an Indian meets Filipino Chinese Tea.
I like to list everything I need and food I’ll be serving so I don’t forget stuff.
I am very forgetful you see! I like to draw a layout of my table setting so I know where everything goes.
I just scribble it down a piece of paper so I know where what food goes where. I am not scrambling last minute trying to figure out where to put everything. Many times, the table setting is set the night before . That way I can just concentrate on the food the day of the Tea. I also just make one or two items & the rest are store bought.

With Love and Blueberries: “Special Diets Tea”
Posted by: | CommentsIt was a different kind of a Tea at my home this March 3. The Very “Special Diets Tea . Starring: The Raw. The Gluten Free. The Organic. The Dairy Free. The Vegan. It was a bunch of moms with kooky diets get together. We’re kooky indeed & proud of it!
Care for some Raw Vegan Blueberry Cheesecake Mousse? Or Raw Creamy Olive Tapenade and Red Pepper Hummus, served with Rice Tortilla chips? Perhaps a steaming bowl of Creamy Vegan mushroom soup? Raw Pecan Pie? Gluten Free chocolate chip cookies? What a party in the mouth!
The food, oh my oh my! Everybody brought something to blow our socks off. Our mouths were in heaven.
This Tea was very close to my heart because it represents a mother’s sacrificing heart for the love of a child. The special diets we each have embarked on came from special diet needs of family members. How true it is that a mother will sacrifice herself, her whole life, as she shakes the world upside down in search of healing cures for her family. “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” ~Hippocrates So we prod on day after day, believing our efforts are not in vain, as we slave away in the kitchen, forever creating new taste sensations to delight our loved ones. We are constantly experimenting with new ways to tantalize the taste buds.
Ahhh, what a treat it was to enjoy each others cooking. Like a soothing salve, it was all offered as comfort food to each other. Made with love and consideration for the special diet needs of everyone. Challenging feat! Rewarding! We oooohed and ahhhhed all night long.
Aebleskivers
Posted by: | CommentsOnce upon a time I went to Solvang and met my first Aebleskivers. It was love at first bite. Mmmmm. What are aebleskivers? They’re round spherical pancakes of Scandinavian origin. They’re like a cross between a popover and pancake. Aebleskiver means “Apple-shaped” and may be prounounced as “eb-el-ski-ver” , “a-bla-ski-va”, “eb-el-sku-wyr” or “ebb-ull-skee-vers”.
Here’s a little of Aebleskiver history. During that time of the Vikings, when they roamed the coastal waters of England and the Atlantic, one band of these rough Vikings was hard hit in battle. As they returned to their ship with dented horn helmets and shields, they made pancakes to regain their strength. They didn’t have proper cookware so they greased their dented shields and poured the batter on them over a fire. The first aebleskivers were born.
